Veteran Justice Outreach
The purpose of the Veteran Justice Outreach Initiative (VJO) initiative is to avoid the unnecessary criminalization of mental illness and extended incarceration among Veterans by ensuring that eligible justice-involved Veterans have timely access to VHA mental health and substance abuse services when clinically indicated, and other VA services and benefits as appropriate.
What are Veterans Treatment Courts?
Veterans Treatment Courts are hybrid Drug and Mental Health Courts that use the Drug Court model to serve veterans struggling with addiction, serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders. They promote sobriety, recovery and stability through a coordinated response that involves cooperation and collaboration with the traditional partners found in Drug and Mental Health Courts, with the addition of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care networks, the Veterans' Benefits Administration, volunteer veteran mentors and veterans and veterans' family support organizations.
Veterans are eligible if:
The process begins with identifying Veterans in the legal system. VA staff will work with the Veteran to find out if they are eligible for care. Any imprisoned Veteran that has served in the military and meets VA eligibility requirements is eligible for VJO or Veterans Justice Outreach services.
