Student Brings Christmas to Veterans
Paige Campbell, a senior at Deer Lakes High School, collected items to donate to Veteran patients and plans to deliver them and visit with Veterans around Christmas.
This Christmas season there will be some Veterans who will receive something special. Paige Campbell, a senior at Deer Lakes High School was moved when her mother told her about Veterans living in VA Butler Healthcare’s community living center.
"I wanted to give something back to those who have given me my freedom," said Paige, whose mother is a retired Army master sergeant and service connect veteran.
A 13-year Girl Scout working on her Gold Award (the equivalent of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts), Paige chose a service project that she felt meant something special for her and her family. She placed boxes at Deer Lakes High School and Middle School, requesting donations of books, puzzle, DVD and a variety of other items. Throughout November, her classmates donated approximately 600 items to be distributed over Christmas.
"She has really impressed me," said Paige’s mother, Jeannette Campbell. "I am very proud of her and this project she chose."
Now that Paige has finished collections, she is coordinating Girl Scout volunteers to come to VA Butler Healthcare during the holidays and spend some quality time with Veterans while distributing the gifts. Of all of the gifts given to a Veteran this holiday, perhaps those one-on-one interactions with Veterans are the most valuable of all.
VA Butler Healthcare depends on volunteers like Paige. Volunteers and donations help Veterans in their emotional and spiritual health. There are a number of Volunteer opportunities for those interested in giving their time. Those interested should call the Voluntary Service Office (800)-362-8262 extension 5044
