NATIONAL VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION WEEK APRIL 10-16
-Why I Volunteer at VA Butler Healthcare-
(Butler, PA) – Jeremy Fleeger, 81, has been a volunteer at VA Butler Healthcare for 13 years accumulating 16,515 hours of service. When asked why he volunteers at VA Butler, he said it was because the VA took good care of his sister when she was a patient here. Volunteering is very rewarding and it keeps him going.
“When my sister passed away, I brought in some of her things to donate and was asked to volunteer, so I did,” states Fleeger. “This was a way to honor my sister and also give back to the VA for the good care she received.” Fleeger volunteers as an escort four days a week helping Veterans to and from their in-house appointments and delivers newspapers and magazines throughout the facility.
VA’s voluntary service is one of the largest volunteer programs in the federal government. In the past 64 years, VA volunteers have donated 724.3 million hours of service worth an estimated $261.6 million dollars. VA Butler Healthcare currently maintains a volunteer force of 391 regularly scheduled volunteers who provide a myriad of services such as greeting Veterans and welcoming them to the facility, and driving Veterans to and from their VA medical appointments
