VA Butler Healthcare To Name Its Community Living Center After Vietnam Veteran

Official Naming Ceremony for the Sergeant Joseph George Kusick VA Community Living Center

Butler, PA – VA Butler Healthcare will host a naming ceremony on November 13, 2017 at 11am in the VA Butler Auditorium (325 New Castle Road) to officially name the Sergeant Joseph George Kusick VA Community Living Center (CLC).

“Sergeant Kusick was a true patriot, and I am honored that VA Butler Healthcare can play a small role in ensuring he is always remembered for his service and sacrifice,” said David P. Cord, VA Butler Healthcare’s Director. “It is an honor to serve my fellow Veterans, and I look forward to continuing to do that in the Sergeant Joseph George Kusick VA Community Living Center.”

Sergeant Joseph George Kusick of Bruin, Pennsylvania was assigned to the command and control detachment of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) of the Army during the Vietnam War. In December of 1967, Kusick was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action. The citation to accompany the Silver Star Medal stated: “Kusick’s gallantry in action, at the cost of his life, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.”

The naming ceremony on November 13 will include a tribute to Sergeant Kusick, remarks by VA officials, a keynote address by U.S. Congressman Mike Kelly, and more. Following the ceremony, attendees may take a tour of the Community Living Center.

The mission of VA Community Living Centers (CLC) is to restore Veterans to maximum function and independence, prevent declines in health, and provide comfort at the end of life. VA Butler's CLC includes 60 residential rooms, a game room, a computer lab, a spa room for therapeutic programs, an atrium and outdoor garden, and much more. It is designed to make Veterans feel more at home by providing them with a community setting, as well as private rooms and baths.
