VA Butler To Host National Veteran ‘X’ Training

Butler, PA – VA Butler Healthcare will host a week long, national Veteran ‘X’ Facilitator Training Program July 10-14, 2017. This training will ultimately help expand the Veteran ‘X’ program throughout the Veterans Health Administration providing an additional service for Veterans in mental health recovery.

“VA Butler was selected to host this important training because of our ongoing, successful Veteran ‘X’ program, which first started here in 2014,” said Cary Adkins, Peer Support Specialist and Veteran ‘X’ Facilitator. “We are the very first facility to host this training outside of the Hampton VA Medical Center where the Veteran ‘X’ concept was first developed. We anticipate 30-35 VA Peer Specialists from across the country to participate.”

The training at VA Butler will help prepare VA Peer Support Specialists to return to their medical centers to develop a local Veteran “X” program, adaptable to their geographic location. In addition to this training, participants must also complete six months of consultation on the implementation of Veteran “X”, after which they will be recognized as a certified Veteran “X” facilitator.

In the Veteran ‘X’ mental health recovery program, Veterans work with other Veterans as a treatment team for a fictitious Veteran ‘X’ who has challenges similar to their own. These challenges are presented in the form of a “scenario” and may include things like mental illness, addiction, homelessness, economic hardship, family issues, etc. As a group, Veterans navigate the many challenging obstacles on the path to recovery. In helping Veteran ‘X,’ Veterans in the group help one another and ultimately themselves.

VA Butler offers weekly Veteran ‘X’ groups, as well as weekly Veteran “HOPE” groups (similar to Veteran ‘X’ but only for women Veterans). To learn more about "Veteran X," Veterans may call (724) 996-8892. To learn more about "Veteran HOPE," women Veterans may call (724) 285-2756.
